Hello everyone,
I own a 89 CRX DX - and recently i noticed when driving from a stop, the car has very little horsepower now. but once i get the engine reving around 3000RPM. The power is fine. Also one day i found my battery dead and unable to get the starter going, and had to jump it. Car starts now, but the horsepower in the 0~2500RPM range is verry bad still. Anyhow, I was wondering if this loss of power is a symptom of a failing alternator? Would appreaceate any input, since i dont want to start repacing parts blindly. Hopefully someone has experienced something like this. thanks!!

i own a repair shop, and it could actually be the alternator causing it not to charge real good which will rob power from the battery and make the car have a little loss of power, but a bad battery will also cause this, what you need to do is charge the battery up real good and then try it,it might just be the alternator working really hard and it cant run the car and charge the weak battery at the same time,i don't think it would cause that bad of a loss of power though but you never know on some of the cars today, good luck with it,i hope this helps.

Honda's are easy to work on. I had a 91 Civic SI which has the same engine layout as your 89 CRX Dx. Take the car to a auto parts store and they can test it for you. If its bad buy a book, pull the bad altenator and swap it out. 30 min job, tops.

If by power you mean electrical then yes. If by HP then no, its not really related. Besides, if memory serves the 89 CRX DX came with an 85 HP engine which isn't much to start with.

The symptoms do not sound like an electrical problem - it's some sort of engine glitch. To tell for sure, turn on the dome light and drive with it on for a while; it will act as a makeshift voltmeter. The light should dim slightly at idle, and regain and maintain full constant brightness at all engine speeds above 2000 rpm. If all of that works, the electrical system is fine and the problem lies elsewhere.

You might have a bad idle sensor, or bad spark plug of
spark plug wire. Its only a 4 cylinder. You can replace
spark plugs and wires cheap. $40.00 do it yourself.
