They are what you ate with your parents in your young days and they remind you of that family warmth and coziness. And your parents probably got the recipe from their parents etc.

Generations of accessabiliy their limited resources. That and innovation in making those resources palatable. Pride enters then and that is a hard combo to beat.

mama feeds you when you're sad
mama feeds them when they visit
mama feeds the gang for holidays
mama always cooks our favorite dishes on special days
alot of things are associated with love, family and special days, I think we grow accustomed to them, as we celebate with those we love (or don't love, and have to eat with anyway!)
Mama has to outcook her relatives, (she can make pasta better, and her gravy is the BEST!!!)))
