Why are they so off from the rest of the TV season? Why are their seasons so short? What's the purpose off that? I love both shows and I can't ever figure out when they're gonna start for a season and then it seems like after only about 6 episodes it's the season finale.

With Monk, they show 6 episodes starting in July, then they go on hiatus for a while. During this season's hiatus they aired 2 special episodes. Then during January the season resumes and they air 6 more episodes. Then they break and the new season starts up in July again. So Monk has about 14 episodes a season.
I don't know how The Closer works, but perhaps it's a similar schedule.

i don't know about monk, but i am a huge closer fan. at the end of last summer, tnt said it would air season 3 starting in january and they had that 2 hour special in december. as of this week, they've announced season 3 will start in june since obviously it did not start in january as they had previously stated. no mention of why has been made public, but as far as i'm concerned they made the right decision. being a summer series, they don't have to compete with already established shows like 24 and american idol that come on during the spring. in the summer, everything else is in reruns. my hope is that they extend it to a full 22 episode season starting earlier in june and ending in the middle of september before the fall regular season starts up again. i signed up for the tnt.com email newsletter regarding the closer so when they have an official season premiere date it will get right to me inbox!

again, they are on cable, and they don't want to compete with first run show on the 4 major networks. they run in the summer and during the winter breaks. Like in dec, then go off for a couple of weeks in feb, and end in march, so they can get bigger rattings.

I know! i was so excited when monk and psych came back then next thing i knew it was time for the finale, i was like wait it just started 2 months ago.. :( since they start so late they could at least have a few more episodes.....right?!?!?

That's just they way it works with the cable channels. they all do it like that: fx, usa, mtv. their seasons are never like the regular channels.
