Generally, no. The more hours a computer runs the more likely it is that some part will fail and the more wear parts will accumulate (bearings will wear, the screen will fade, etc), but shutting down the computer will not significantly increase the total number of hours that it can run before a failure.
However, shutting down the computer when it is not in use will keep it useful for a longer period. For example, suppose you have a computer that can run for 1000 hours before failing and you use the computer 1 hour per day. If you shut down the computer when you are not using it, it will last 1000 days. If you let the computer run all the time it will only last about 6 weeks (of course computers really last much longer than this).
Unless you have an important reason to keep your computer active when you aren't using it, you should at least put in into sleep or hibernation mode for power conservation reasons.

Yes it can. Be aware that as long as your unit is turned on the hard drive is spinning and the life of a hard drive is measured in hours. This is the main reason you should back up your information on a regular basis. I work for a small shop that replaces these drives and I cant tell you how many people loose everything because of this one little thing, so be smart - back up anything valuable and turn the darn thing off if your not using it!

.... if it's in constant use, then it should go into sleep mode automatically if left unused for 10 or so minute's.
However if your'e going to leave it unused for hour's, then it's best to close it down, because if you get into the habit of leaving it like that for day's, an electrical shorting or overheating problem could easily occur while your'e away at work or shopping in town, and the next thing you know,... your house is a pile of ashe's..... It's not something that happen's automatically everyday,... but when dealing with household electrical appliances, do everything you can to eliminate, or minimise fire risk to your home.... Any electrical appliance that does not need to be left on uneccessarily for hour's and hour's, or day's and day's should alway's be shut down if not needed...

Three things could happen.
1) a barring could come loose
2) your hard-drive could over heat and crash
3) your screen can loose it's color for being on too long
You might think that if you close the laptop screen then you are safe, a common misconception, closing the screen dose not save your laptop! It only reduces the chances of the above mishaps.

No, it can't unless your CPU fan is not working properly & due to over heat. You may get this if you have kept your PC in an unventilated Place. Due to power surge also it can shutdown.

It's possible, but not likely.
Your computer isn't using as much power/producing as much heat neutral as opposed to you doing something on it.
