Because it comes down to politics. I agree with your statement that we should have made English the official language of America a long time ago. But the way our political is set with two parties running the show(lets admit that they both suck) they are scraping for whatever votes they can get and they don't want to appear politically incorrect or hurt anyone's feelings. This is why our country is gradually falling until it falls to far and can't get back up!

It doesnt need to be the constitutionally official or legal official language.
We all know that the vast majority speak it.. we know that throughout the world english is the language in which business is conducted.
And we know that if you do not learn english you are doing yourself an injustice if you wish to live somewhere where english is the predominant language.
( actually no matter where you live you should learn it )

When Colorado tried to pass that, it turned out they would have had to change the names of colorful Colorado( which means colorful colorful-Colorado is Spanish for colorful or maybe red) the names of cities and rivers, etc. would all have to change. I hate to bring it up, but many places named by the Spanish back when they owned a large part of the current US. It would be good to think before passing any bills!

English is the de facto official language of America. You don't need to make it "official" by law. I mean, why be so insecure? There are bette things to do with your time.
