Oh, the old trick. Those companies used to use this trick for quite a long time. The just want you to buy their product. For addition, pop-up and virus are two different thing. You need a pop-up blocker and an anti-virus software.
Don't buy any anti-virus software that you don't know, or you never heard before. There's plenty of anti-virus software that really does the work.

Some programs that are purchased and updated for a fee are not always the best ones to have. You can find free programs and download them from the net for free. I use AVG and Spyware Terminator and am happy to say that they can be found for free on the net and all you have to do is keep them updated - there is no charge for either of these and since installing them both, I have not yet caught a virus and AVG scanning in the background when on the net helps keep the spyware very much under control!

There are many fake anti-virus programs that yu can get. However, you may have a legimate anti-virus and still expierence this problem. These pop-ups are from what is known as Spyware. You usually will need a special program for removing these. One free program that can remove a lot of spyware is Spybot. For antivirus, I recommend looking into AVG, who also provides a free version of their software. These together should help to better secure your computer.

you're splendid, Norton is a nightmare. do away with it out of your laptop by using going to start -> administration Panel -> upload or do away with Programmes and splendid-click on the Norton get right of entry to. while you're using Vista bypass to start -> administration Panel -> Programmes. AVG is a good, unfastened anti-virus programme yet i'd advise Kaspersky. you will get the anti-virus for some pounds and the full information superhighway protection suite is approximately two times the fee or much less. It runs on the instant, makes use of a few distance much less memory than Norton and could no longer supply you any hassle!

Of course they will tell you you have a virus.... they want you to spend money on their anti-virus programme, which may or may not be reliable, or even safe.
Invest in a reputable anti-virus tool, keep it up to date, and consider getting a pop-up blocker as well :-)

The Anti virus software is for viruses. You are having problems with spyware - which is why you are getting all these pop-ups. You need a pop up blocker (google toolbar works well) and anti-spyware software. There are many free ones available online for you to download (try download.com). A popular one is AVG (http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Spyware/3000-8022_4-10610898.html?tag=lst-0-1) and also Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html).
Hope this helps

The pop-up ads have nothing to do with having a virus. The ad is a ploy to encourage the stupid to use download and buy their product.

These are genuine programs and they're free for home use, download them. Then unplug from the internet, uninstall what you have, install these.
Then switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

You need to install one anti virus;

http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender 8 doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus.
You need all these anti spyware programs;

http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.

Plus;

And these are useful utilities;

Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

The pop ups are caused by trojans (also known as spyware) and an anti virus doesn't find or prevent trojans. You need anti spyware as well as an anti virus.
They are different programs and need different software to remove them.
You also need to enable the pop up blocker in your web browser, open it and go to Tools - Options and check the pop up blocker is on.

What program?
I'm pretty sure the program doesn't state in general it will protect you from viruses, but rather, it'll protect you from the viruses it's aware of.
Additionally, because it says it can do something, doesn't mean it'll happen, unless it specifies it can remove a certain type of virus.
