I strongly feel that you can't put a price tag on family issues so get the best lawyer possible regardless of the price. I'm sure you know people that have gone through the same process so ask them for a referral. I would also consider looking within the same county first.

If you can find a competent attorney in your area, that would be better for you. First, an out of town attorney would charge for travel time to go to court and cost you more $$$. Second, you could have easier access to a local attorney...it would make it easier for you meet with him or her regarding your case. Unless your case is highly unusual, there shouldn't be any reason that would prevent you from finding a good attorney in your area.

I would recommend getting the most effective lawyer for the issue you have and the court hearing it. Look for experience and wisdom, not cost.

Get the best you can afford. Do as much research as possible to find the best. If that person cannot help you (because of location or other issues), he or she will be able to direct you to someone capable who can.
Best of luck for all involved.
