If you haven't already, please read the book. It's excellent.
Any-who, Atticus is a Christ-like figure in the book. Lee describes him as being able to "calm the sea". (hence the miracle on the water).
He was spat upon by Mr. Ewell and did not retaliate. He only said that he wished Mr. Ewell didn't chew tobacco. (hence, during the Passion the soldiers abused him. This is also an example of turning the other cheek).
He said that he would galdy take abuse from Mr. Ewell if it meant that Mayella didn't have to. (hence Jesus dying on the cross so mankind didn't have to).
When Scout asks him if he's a N-Word lover, he says "Of course. I do my best to love everybody". (hence, Christ loving the tax collectors, the prostitues the as well as those who were "upstanding" citizens).
There are more examples...but this gives you a start. He has the best morals of anyone in the book.

He is a kindly, honest and determined man. You do need to read the book, but his most significant action is to defend a ***** accused of raping a white woman and to prevent his being lynched. Remember, the setting here is rural Alabama in the early 30s.

Atticus is pretty much a morally perfect character, he understands children, but at the same time he teaches them right from wrong. He always does what is best for his kids and he sets good examples, such as not calling black people offensive neams, telling scout to hold her head up high when people criticize her b/c atticus is defending a black man, and forces Jem to apologize to mrs. dubose after he ruins her flowers, although it was mrs. dubose's fault.

Atticus is very calm, he is very reasonable. His actions in the book may include defending an African American when there was segregation, raising his kids alone, and teaching his kids very important lessons.

I think the best word to define Atticus is principled. He stands up for his beliefs - even when they arent the most popular beliefs. He is honest, sincere, compassionate, empathetic, genuine. His actions prove that.

I think above all, Atticus is dutiful and idealistic. He puts duty above all other things.
There's this great scene when, after Tom Robinson has died, when he must leave to notify Tom's family. The next door neighbor tries to explain to Jem, "There are men who are put on this earth to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father is one of those men."
He is also brave, resolute, and humble.

As I may recall from reading it long ago, Atticus is pretty serious character because he's a lawyer.
