Let's compare warranties. Asphalt shingles- 30 yrs. (only about 15 yrs. of life, though). Tin- 50-100 yrs. You do the math. Tin is way more expensive, but usually works out to save you over the life of the roof (longer than yours). For Canadian weather, I'd strongly recommend the tin as it sheds snow/rain better. Oh, I'm thinking NW Canada, not sure where you live, but still, tin is the better material all the way around.

Tin Shingles

Some of the pros and cons, asphalt is initially cheaper, better insulation and holds the snow on while it melts, it is also quiter in a hail storm. The cons are it doesn't last as long and it will loose shingles during high winds once it starts to age.
The metal roofs although bullet proof do have some drawbacks, in a hail storm you will hear every drop or at least it seems that way, the other thing to consider is when snow starts to melt off it creates a blade of ice that slides off in one large heavy piece that can kill someone walking under it. They do make ice dams to go on them but they don't work all that well. There are other alternative materials that are now out you may want to look into, one of the best is made from old tires, it also lasts forever and looks great. I hope this helped.

I prefer a tin roof over asphalt shingles. It deters the build up of snow and ice. Also it is more attractive and adds real value to your home since it lasts forever. It is more expensive to put on but again... it lasts forever and you could recoup some of the cost in the resale of your home someday. I would not hesitate to shingle a roof by myself since it doesn't always have to be 100% perfect. I would NEVER do my own tin roof since one gap could cause leaks. I would always have a professional do it and ask for references and follow up on them. As a women... I am obligated to mention the fact that it comes in a huge array of colors.... lol

Good Luck!!

Sheet steel roof coverings are the only way to go for a roof that will last almost forever. See your nearest Home improvement center or better yet, contact a Contractor specializing in Sheet steel roof coverings. Less expensive in the long run. Not tin!!!!

tin is much better , add at least 80% to cover the rpice of tin or metal, shingles are quoted as lasting 35 years if they stay on the roof . lol lol

Yes rolled roofing is for low pitch roofs. He amy be charging to tear off and dispose of the old roof material. If it leaked, he probably will have to replace the plywood also. The rolled roofing is cheaper than shingles. You can also get another estimate.
