its just a confidence booster kinda thing. like u congratulate the player for hitting the shot. as easy as a FT is, a lot of people still shoot it at a poor rate....there is some pressure when the shot is easy to hit!!!
its the same like some teams who will shoot FT's in warm ups....players all line up around the key and move through shooting FT's. when they hit them, they clap the player kinda thing...i think its moral boosting, team bonding kinda thing.....
i think slaps on the bums mean, "ill call u after the game ;) "

It's for morale, and the fact that they are a team. In basketball and in most team sports, being a "team" is very important.
