"Eccentric" literally means, "deviating from the recognized or customary character, practice, etc.; irregular; erratic; peculiar; odd".

So if someone says someone is eccentric, they mean the person is sort of off-beat; very unique, in a quirky kind of way.

It's usually associated with someone who has a lot of money. The important part of it is that the person just acts "weird".

There is probably a picture of Howard Hughes next to "eccentric" in the dictionary. He built the Spruce Goose (a gigantic wooden plane). He was germophobic and always wore the white mask and gloves. He was very reclusive and had OCD.

I would say that Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean was eccentric. He acts weird and awkward for no good reason.

The eccentric old man spent his waning days in solitary rather than enjoying the millions of dollars he spent his life earning.

Someone who is alittle out of the ordinary norm
Mainly a person who is alittle on the odd side.
Specifically those persons who either live on there own and
prefer to have little or no contact with another human being.
One who prefers there privacy and conducts unusual habits.
I know of someone who doesn't like banks, has his money collected (rent funds) so he can look and feel it and then hide it.
Another is a person who collects junk / Newspapers/ etc and hoards it until the house becomes a haven for rats and rodents etc.

Then there is the otherside, perfectly sane and normal when you first meet, but then without further ado he or she will just disappear, leave you to your own means.
They are loners and perfectly fine human beings, just that they prefer there own company.
Hope that helps.

By the way they are not loony tunes, as some may think.
Generally they are very articulate/extremely intelligent people.
No one knows why they become that way. But they enjoy life as much as anyone else.

Means basically , "peculiar in manner or character"

For instance: Madonna is an eccentric woman. The way she presents herself during her shows, the gestures, attitudes, etc, are kind of far away we would call "normal".

Eccentric comes from Latin... Centric means centered or on point. ec/ex means off, so eccentric means off center. If we call someone eccentric it means that they are off center or UNusual (not usual)
