yes, Smoe edibles, such as tomatoes, have been grown in water. this is called hydroponics. the roots are grown in a tube that has fresh warter pumped into it along with some fertilizer, the fertilizer helps sustain and gie the roots and plant its nurtients while the water provides the limited medium for root growth. thes pants are not easily grown however. I wopuld not sugest this approach it is time consuming and reuqires much knowledge and care. for the homeowner, it is simply easier to remain with plants planted in soil.

If you follow hydroponics, they could. You have to know the nutrient needs of the plant and provide it in proper dosage, in the water....

I'm pretty sure that some times can, but most need soil, water, sun, and fertilizer(?) to grow.
