it only drains him if he doesn't like it. I like it and it doesn't drain me, but a friend of mine used to do it and his head hurt whenever the teacher asked us to make an app in C++, or tell him what var script to use in java. He later switched to 3d animation, and he is a lot happier now. So i would say he is either hating his job, or faking it. If he is hating his job, get him a new one. Stress is dangerous.

I dont think so, programming makes minds sharper, think harder, but it depends on an individual. If he just thinking about an issue all the time then he wouldnt be able to concentrate on anything else. I am a programmer my self, sometimes some issues needs lots of thinking, I keep getting ideas all the time for instance in bath... :) But I never do mistakes at home neither my mind is dead when i go home. Try to get him to take things easy.... :)

Well it is taxing to think up algorithms. Not really think it has to do with with a male excuse to get out work around house.
In college I used to get so brain dead, I could not think of the next step in an algorithm. What I would do is say, "Time for this one to go home," then I would sleep. Next morning a lot of times my answer to the algorithm would come enlightenment and there would be my answer.
Male excuse though.

Programming definitely consumes the majority of the brain's thought process. It certainly requires one to be in a mindset that is devoted to performing the logical calculations that are common with programming work. Even though it is not physically exhaustive it is mentally exhaustive which can be taxing on the body as a whole. Therefore, occupations such as programming can drain the mind as your husband is experiencing.

:) i program all day, night, and in my dreams sometimes. i think depending on what you program as to how well you function afterwards. i do feel the need to "unwind" by doing something fun (playing a game, watching a movie, cleaning up a bit) but as for just being brain dead after a 12 hour session, i would say 1hour rest and i'm back to normal.

He makes mistakes when he's programming, too - but it is easier to correct a bug and recompile than it is to turn back time and do something the right way, with 20:20 hindsight. Your husband's simple mistakes are understandable. He's beta-testing himself on you.

I think your husband is tired and needs along break. Programming doesn't do that to your brain. He shouldn't be claiming he's brain dead.
Perhaps he's having other problems at work and is reluctant to talk to you about them, or he's just tired.
Either way, talk to him and ask him whats wrong. Ask him if he's having problems in work. Perhaps he has a deadline to meet or he can't do a particular program correctly, but that shouldn't cause him to be like that.
Good luck.

It isn't about programming; what ever we do in life laking passion, we obviously don't like and being forced to do them, we'd end up hating what we do and coming back home with some ugly bad mood.
So your husband probably doesn't really like what he does in his job; that's the way I see it.

Depending on what is going on, thinking all day can make you tired and therefore mistakes can be easily made after work.
