Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.

The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

Depending on what "Administrator" password you forgot, you might be able to change it very easily. Try starting your computer in safemode (restart and press F8 until you get to a screen where you can select what "mode"). When you get there, the default administrator normally doesn't have a password, unless someone set one. you can login to that account and change the password from there.

There are other options, but I would leave those to more advanced users. There are programs to do it, and also running Linux, you can get around Windows security.

If safemode doesn't work, send me a personal message and I can give you some information of software that you can use for this.

Right first thing first, start up your computer - then keep pressing F8 until an options menu pops up, it should give you an option to star in certain modes. i think you should start in safe mode, ( if not just try others,) then, at the login screen, there should be an option to choose a user called 'ADMINISTRATOR' this should have no password protect on and you ashould be able to login using this user. Then go to control panel - users - and remove the password from your current admin, then shut down and restart normally and your user should not have a password on. This should work as ive used it many times. Kyle

Do you have a password reset disk? If so:
1.On the Windows XP logon screen, click the user name that you want to use. The Type your password box appears. Press ENTER or click the right-arrow button. You receive the following error message:
Did you forget your password?
You can click the "?" button to see your password hint.
Or you can use your password reset disk.

Please type your password again.
Be sure to use the correct uppercase and lowercase letters.
2.Click use your password reset disk. The Password Reset Wizard starts. The Password Reset Wizard permits you to create a new password for your user account.
3.Click Next.
4.Insert the password reset disk into drive A, and then click Next.
5.Type a new password in the Type a new password box.
6.Type the same password in the Type the password again to confirm box.
7.In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint to remind you of your password if you forget the new password.

Note This hint is visible to anyone who tries to log on to the computer by using your user account.
8.Click Next, and then click Finish. The Password Reset Wizard quits, and you return to the Windows XP logon screen.

Note The password reset disk is automatically updated with the new password information. You do not have to create a new password reset disk.
9.Type your new password in the Type your password box, and then click the right-arrow button to log on to the computer.

Can you login to another Administrator account? If so:
1. Restart the computer. After the Power On Self Test (POST), press the F8 key.
2. On the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
3. When you are prompted to select the operating system to start, select Microsoft Windows XP edition (where edition is the edition of Windows XP that is installed), and then press ENTER.
4. On the To begin, click your user name screen, click Administrator.
5. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

Note In some cases, the Administrator password may be set to a blank password. In this case, do not type a password before you press ENTER.
6. Click Yes to acknowledge that Windows is running in safe mode.
7. Click Start, and then click Control Panel (or point to Settings, and then click Control Panel).
8. Click User Accounts.
9. Click the user account whose password you want to change.
10. Click Change the Password if you want to keep a password, or click Remove password if you do not want to use a password. If you remove the password, go to step 11.
11. Type the new password for the user, and then click Change Password.
12. Quit the User Accounts tool, and then restart the computer.

If you don't have a password reset disk or you have no other administrator account, there's still another way but i don't know whether it works. Do you have your Windows XP CD? If so:

Go to the following link to follow the steps. It is a security hole for Windows XP.

I have noticed that some people on e-Bay are offering a password retrieval program on CD for under $10...otherwise, you may want to contact Dell and ask them for a back door password...this should let you into your computer and allow you to change your password...they should be able to give it to you if you can give them the serial number off of your computer! Good Luck & I hope that one of these suggestions will resolve your problem!

You have got to look at the hint, you made, when you type the wrong password.

You can buy disc to crack the password, or you may be lucky and download one.

Future, when you back up your computer, write it on a notepad, or next time don't install a password

Make the password something you can remember.
