On march 17th 2006. It started when I started my car up, I have no idea why it did it. But still to this day it still traumitizes me everytime i start a car. I think about it all the time and Im always reluctant to drive anywhere because I feel like it will just happen to me again. I know a fire can happen any time from a car being started to in the middle of driving.... My question is how do I get over this because it eats me away every day. And secondly how likely is it that my current (not the same car) car will do it to?

my old car was a nissian sentra and my current car is a Dodge/ Chrysler neon. It started just from starting right up. First what happened was it billowed smoke like crazy, so I turned it off, got out and about a minute later im standing beside it and a flame starts right underneath.

What kind of car did you have and what kind of car do you currently have? The odds of this happening to the same person twice, in two different cars is about 1 in a million. Hit me back on what the cars are and I can probably be more accurate.

Edit: Yeah, it is pretty rare for it to start on fire like that, it was most likely wiring, although I know someone who my father worked for had a backhoe that had been sitting for awhile and he had to use it for a job down the road; he took it down about a mile then called up my dad and told him it was on fire; turns out a bird built a nest on the exhaust manifold.
Neons don't really have much of a history of catching on fire; it is really a freak accident; Something like this can really affect you; when I was 8 my fathers truck caught on fire (electrical) I was pretty brave though, I ran to the neighbors and got their hose while my father was on the ground trieing to keep the house from catching on fire; I helped him extinguish it until the fire department got there; by then the airbags were blowing up and the 30 caliber rounds he had in it were flying everywhere. After that I had nightmares about it until I was ten, although it might be because of the spanking I got for being so arrogant lol. Well, I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist, or see if you can find some real numbers on the odds of a car setting on fire like that, it is pretty rare; it might set you mind at ease. I am very sorry for your unfortunate incident, I hope you are able to get over it very soon!!

The only thing I can think of is that after the crash some gasoline started to leak and caught fire by coming into contact with the exhaust manifold which gets extremely hot or maybe a spark from some grounded wires in the engine compartment.

It is very, very rare for a car to burst into flames when you start it up. If you keep the vehicle maintained...you really shouldn't worry about it. Unless you are driving a top fuel dragster...you really don't need to be overly concerned with the possibility of it catching fire.

a car catching on fire without being in a crash, or having been tinkered with recently is pretty much unheard of. As for your issues with it, i would see a psyciatrist.
