It came about when the hunters killed the game too far from the fire and had to transport it back to the cooks. Mastodons were too heavy to carry so they invented the wheel and it's been a downhill story since then.

A lot of animals transport things.
Birds get stuff to build nests.
Lots of parent animals carry food home to offspring.
