The hardest thing about coping with an addiction is thinking about how you can never/ever play with the addiction. . . to pick up drinking or smoking ever again.
To think about not having your "crutch" FOREVER is a very very hard concept but as I have learned in AA,we haven't gotten to FOREVER yet. All we have is today and just for today I do not drink and I let FOREVER take care of it's self ONE DAY AT A TIME.
Let this person know how proud of them you are and that you know they are going through a tough time but that you support their efforts and you are there for them.
When they let the FOREVER concept get to them, just remind them that they only have to leave dipping/chewing alone just for today. . . . ONE DAY AT A TIME.
There is another saying. . . If I do today what I did yesterday I don't have to drink (chew/dip) and it's very encouraging.

Yes, I'm gearing up for trying (again) to quit. I figured it out the other day... In Pennsylvania, a pack-a-day habit costs me almost $1000 a year IN TAXES ALONE. If I had to write out a check for that amount there is no way I'd be smoking. Why do I voluntarily pay extra taxes when I'm always looking to reduce my tax load? Stupid. I've had it. Wait until there are no more of us smokers out here.... They'll be taxing Twinkies and coffee.

I would go to the American Cancer Societies website, I am sure that you can find some thoroughly revolting pictures of people with month cancer because of this addition.

I worked in an oral surgeons office many years ago, as an office manager; and dealt with several clients who had cancerous growths in their mouths that had literally eaten away their gums and jawline, which cause them to lose their teeth in their twenties and thirties.

These people had to go through extensive plastic surgeries and have plates of replacement teeth made in order to regain some semblance of facial structure.

One of the clients that I was familiar with died from invasive brain cancer before the age of twenty-five, as the cancer from his chewing habit had invaded his entire body. It was dreadful to watch someone so young just fade off of the earth because of an additive choice.

This was nearly twenty years ago, and I can still remember every detail of that young mans futile treatment. He was still trying to chew literally during his last few hours of life. His parents were completely destroyed.

Please, get this person some help, before they ruin or lose their lives.

You are a wonderful and caring person to be worrying about this persons health and well-being.

An addict will only quit when he or she is ready to do so, however, it wouldn't hurt to dig up some nasty pictures of mouth and throat cancer victims on the internet and share them with your friend! I agree it's a disgusting habit but all you can do is hope your friend gets help and quits on his own.

Tell them you don't like it and it's disgusting. Remember, though that it's up to them. If that person wants to chew, they're going to chew.
