My daughter just turned one. I just found out I am pregnant again. She has always slept with us and she always falls assleep nursing. How do I go about wiening her and getting her into her own bed? Should I do one at a time? I tried putting her in her own bed in our room and not nursing her at night. She cried all day long and screamed if I left the room. I went back to letting her sleep with us and nurse and she is happy crawling to other rooms without me. I just don't know how to do this the right way.

you still have many many months to worry about weaning... you definatly want to do one at a time... maybe the sleep situation, as that is more pressing... unless, will she sleep on daddies side? That way you can keep her from the newborn?

Its completly safe to nurse throughout your pregnancy and many women nurse both once the second has arrived. (unless you have a history of premature labor)

You have several months to work this out... what is your main goal?

Routine is key, babies and children need them, makeing big changes upsets them, so make suer you start with something that can be changed little by little so that it will work and change as she does. I suggest nursing her in a chair in her room until she falls alseep, wait 10 to 15 mins then move her to her bed. After a while try a pasifier instead of nursing. I don't recommend a bottle because that can rot her baby teeth and can cause trouble potty training time coems around. Hold close her like you would if you were going to nurse (you can even try letting her use your uncovered breast like a pillow) her but instead of letting her nurse give her the passie and rock/hum/sing softly whatever it takes to get her to fall asleep, wait the 10 -15 mins then move her to her bed. When she is moved to a big girl bed, you can sit with her on her bed, cuddle her with her passie and read to her.

Good luck.

You need to change the routine a little. Instead of nursing her in bed with you, nurse her upright on the couch and then give her a pacifier as she's falling asleep. Do this a few nights, and then, after nursing her, lay her down in bed with the pacifier. It will take some time but if she likes the "binky" it'll be a great help for a bedtime routine.

You have a big problem. You have learned from this, I hope. Give her a bottle or a pacifier. It is easier to let a child sleep with you than to deal with it. It is hard to be a parent and easier to let them have their way than to be determined. Maybe you could try leaving the door open. Just keep carrying her back to her own bed until she tires of it. It is so easy to come up with an answer when it is for someone else. Try everything you can think of, maybe something will work. Maybe get some books from the library on parenting. Use the word No forcefully or like you mean it. If she cries, cry in return when she wants to sleep with you. Something might work.

Hard question. My pediatrician reccomends mom not sleeping in the same room during weaning. She reccomends a water bottle or water sippy cup and dad sleeping alone with the baby. She said the baby will cry, but she will give up after awhile. She said it will take about 3-4 days, but after that she won't expect it any more. Then you can sleep in your usual routine. Good luck!

have you tried the playtex nurser bottles with the drop in liners? the nipples on those are big and soft and shaped like a breast, so the baby has an easier time switching. start with the bottle while she is in bed with you, then move her to the bed with the bottle. it will take time but it can be done. good luck
