I own a sarassa goldfish, and we've had him for a good 3 years now. Recently I've noticed he has red scales. Before his tail had red streaks on his tail, but we tried to treat it with medicine and nothing happened. We assumed it to be a color change and ignored it. Now he has red scales near the top fin on his left side. Whats wrong with my goldfish?!

Red streaks in the fins often mean a bacterial infection in the blood or internal organs. Try treating with Furanace and antibacterial medicated food. Treat for 10 days to 2 weeks and that should clear it up. Be sure to remove the carbon before you treat andreplace it after the last day to help remove the left over medication.

Best of luck with it

Magic man is on the money! Finally someone who is very intelligable about fish and their diseases. Seems like a bacterial infection. Any red streaking tends to be so. Some goldfish with long flowing tails do have streaks in their tails and are perfectly fine. I would be concerned about the red scales. Definately a course of anti-bacterial meds would clear up the problem. I have had many successes with tetracyline food. It does not mess up the water or your ecosystem. Either way you would be fine though. Good Luck

I think you are overfeeding your fish. I had the same problem with my fish. It has to do with the veins working too hard or something...? Yeah...but if there are red streaks then I'm almost sure it's from overfeeding. If you give it a medication (for an exterior bacteria infection, perhaps) and feed it less, then it should clear up.

If you are really worried, find resources on your breed of fish. If memory serves me (sometimes yes, sometimes no lol) your fish will actually change colors as they grow, so I am thinking that you dont need to worry about the color on the scales. Now if you get actual fungus growing there, normally white in color, then get the treatments started.
Good luck.

Try taking your goldfish to a vet and see if he can diagnose the problem.
