Why is the kingdom Protista considered by many to represent perhaps as many as 6 separate kingdoms?

Kingdom Protista is the equivalent of the Miscellaneous file. This kingdom includes all the organisms that don't seem to fit into any of the other kingdoms.

Because there are that many kingdoms of life, of which protista is one.
