Cultural relativism is the principle that an individual human's beliefs and activities should be interpreted in terms of his or her own culture.

According to cultural relativism, it is never true to say simply that a certain kind of behaviour is right or wrong; rather, it can only ever be true that a certain kind a behaviour is right or wrong relative to a specified society.

I'll take a stab at it....
I think cultural relevance is something "symbolic" to a sect of people.... Ex. A college grad getting a job on Wall Street has in essence "arrived" and is envied by his peers who do NOT work there because all during college their professors beat into them that the ONLY successful job is on Wall Street.

Ex. The music of the 60's (drug-induced, psychedelic) defines what a "hippie" is. It was literally "worshipped", almost cultish, and Woodstock was their Great Wizard of OZ.
The moniker of hippies was their love beads and tie-dyed everything. The long haired dudes of the time and "free love" were how young people expressed themselves and "freed their minds" so they wouldn't have to confront what was reality at the time (Vietnam War, protests, draft, Americans getting killed). The media of that time reported their biases daily until a great many Americans turned their backs on the American Soldier as we know him, and became an angry, unconsoleable generation....
