I talk to my horse- she is spooky, but hates being laughed at- so I ridicule her when she spooks- and she quiets right down (annoyed, but she listens) It isn't the words- I could go blah blah blah, but it is the tone and the structure that they (and all animals) listen to.
Try saying jumbled words in the tone of "want to go for a walk!?" to your dogs- they will probably get all excited and get the leash- even though you didn't say anything.

For sure, I talk to my dogs all the time. I heard that dogs have the understanding of language the same as a two year old. My dogs love it.

I talk to my dogs a lot, but not one-sided conversations they don't understand. When I feed them, I call them by saying, "Are you hungry?" When I see one of them sitting near the door, I say, "Do you need to go outside?" If they don't react, I don't have to get up and let them out, but if they have to pee, they jump to their feet and put their nose to the door handle. "Are you ready to go to the park?" "Do you wanna go for a walk?" I'm sure they only understand the last words, but that's enough. :)

Im always talking to my horses comands though not a conversation.

I talk to my kitties all the time. I make eye contact, and they talk back to me too(not in English, in cat heehee). My friends don't believe me, but they don't understand....

I do all the time when I feel sad because all of my 12 pets keep me company when I FEEL DOWN... my mom especially talks to my pets!!! A LOT!!! =)
