My pediatrician's office called today and said that some of the test results from DD's newborn screen came back abnormal. I'm going in tomorrow, but they said that's all they could tell me on the phone. OMG I'm freaking out. How can I wait until tomorrow?!?!? What does the screening test for?? Has this happened to anyone else?? Are the things they test for treatable? Please help, I'm so scared....

Take a DEEP BREATH. Tomorrow will be here soon enough and once you know what labs were abnormal, you can start from there. I know it sounds easier said than done, but trust me on this.

Newborn Screening (NBS) was put in place to test for certain disorders but they are not 100%. Sometimes you can get false positives. The reality is that your child is more in danger without the NBS. If something is wrong, you want to know as soon as possible. Even if it is not "treatable" as you question, most of the disorders are "manageable".

I can appreciate your fears and concerns, but once you have spoken to the doctor you will have a better idea of what you are dealing with or if there are other tests to be done. Remember, you are not alone in this. My son was diagnosed with MCAD through NBS. MCAD is a fatty oxidation disorder in which his body cannot process stored fat and turn it into energy. We have been blessed that since he was diagnosed at birth, we have never had any type of "crisis" because of the MCAD. We compare it to diabetes in some ways because he must eat every 4-5 hours.

I hope that helps - maybe a little? I've been where you are and I wish I could help more. :)

Good luck tomorrow!

3/16 - Wondering how you made out at the doctors.

The newborn screening is for a bunch of genetic diseases and other disorders. When my daughter was born her test came back with results that were abnormal. I believe that she had a higher level of progesterone. The neonatologist just had her retested and everything was normal. I wouldn't get too worried about it. Most likely the retest will be normal.

how many months are you? It could be alot of things depending on that. Sorry you have to go another day, they should be able to tell you what test came back abnormal.
