Linux is Free and much software is free. Also, you can do a Dual-Boot and still have Windows until you learn Linux. I using Ubuntu, listening to the Moody Blues and surfing the web. This the pro.
Cons, if you a Gamer, you may not be able to run everything you want. There is a Program called "Wine" that can run some Windows programs and many are running WOW (World of Warcraft), but, you will have to learn these things.
Linux is a lot like DOS, though there a lot of point and click like windows, you may need to learn Command Line Enteries to Configure more complicated stuff. But, it put you more in touch with your computer. Below I give you some good links to help you. Remember when you download an ISO file use the info link to check the file before you Burn to CD; MD5SUM I think.
IF, you not have a Burning Software that do ISO get "Infrarecorder" it free. Nero work to. If, you not sure how to Burn the ISO to CD ask on the forums, this a good place for help.
Psychocats walk you through your Install. I think he give other versions, but, I am directing you toward Ubuntu. There are many other versions.

Go here, I use 6.10; http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
6.06 LTS has longer support.
If you not have a CD Burning software that do ISO files, go here; http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5
Here tell how to check your download to be sure it good; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Here is a good place to learn a lot; http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.php

Linux LIVE CD. You can type this in google search engine.

Basically you need to burn the iso image into a disc and boot from it. You can still use linux to do your stuffs. When you're done, simply remove the disc and boot back to your own windows.

PRO : Does not impact your installed windows.
CON : You may not be able to access your windows partition.
Configuration can't be saved since it is running from memory and CD.
