It sounds like your OS has become corrupt, so it's time to pull out the emergency CD/DVD that came with your computer and use it.

All emergency recovery disks that I have seen have had a procedure to completely restore the hard drive to factory spec wiping out everything that is on the drive in the process, which is what you want to do to get ride of the old problems. Unfortunately, it also means you lose all your data that was not backed up in the process.

Sometimes, there is an option to fix your setup. If you have this option you can always try it ans see if it works. If it does, it will at least give you a chance to backup your data. I would probably go back after you get your data copied to CD(s) and re-run the recovery disk and do a full restore, then pick up all the patches from Microsoft. It's a pain in the ***, but you will end up with a much cleaner and more stable OS in the end.

I have 23 years working with computers and Microsoft software.

Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, make more efficient use of
the hardware - and they're all free.
