at my old job, we used to be able to send messages to other people on the network using the "run" command.... i cant remember exactly how to do it, but i think you had to know the name of each computer that you wanted to "chat" with.

Easiest way to use it...Start/Run, cmd, press enter, and run the above.

it's an old command already. Moern Windows do not support it. Any lan messaging program will do this task easy.

run--cmd--"enter"--netsend (the message goes here). Enter.
