I was just wondering how extensive the burning was and if congress and everything was still able to operate in the capital after it was burnt down by the British in the War of 1812.

No, actually the capital was originally in New York, but after the capital was burned then moved the offical capital to D.C. I believe they operated out of the New York state house until construction was finished.
