A small version of the modern Boehm flute is indeed a piccolo. There is also a soprano flute in the key of Eb that is smaller than the recular C flute and bigger than the piccolo. The piccolo is in the key of C, though there still are some band pieces that have music written for the Db piccolo. There are many different types of flutes. They can be made of wood, metal and there is even flutes made of glass. The pennywhistle is also small flute.
James Galway is one of the worlds most accomplished flutists and he plays the pennywhistle very well. It is played in a vertical fashion as opposed to horizontal like the transverse piccolo.
