My 17 year-old Siamese cat just died last week, and the kids are already starting to ask when we might get another cat. We are huge pet-lovers (suckers) but I am not sure when the time will be right for a new kitty . . .

Well, I am a huge pet lover too! As soon as any of my small pets like hamsters, fish, etc. died I got a new one the next day, but a bigger pet thaty has more responsibility I would wait a while untill I know the breed I want, the gender I want, etc. If you guys are over the death and ready for a new one, I would say it's not to soon to start looking for a new one now! Good luck!

If the thought of getting another cat still hurts, it's not time to get a new one. Explain that to the kids. They might not understand, depending on their ages, but it's an invaluable lesson to kids to see that pets are worth grieving for, and what healthy grieving consists of.

When the time is right, you'll start missing HAVING a cat around, rather than missing YOUR cat. My sympathies for your loss.

EDIT: I take that back... you'll probably NEVER stop missing your cat. I still miss my dog that died in 2001. But I think you'll know what I mean when the time comes.

I would try to wait a few weeks, just because you want your kids to be able to deal with loss and not feel like things/people need to be replaced immeiatley. But theres no reason why you should need to wait more than one or two months, especially with kids. remember, if you want to get a kitten, the baby boom starts in about may, so there will be lots of kitties looking for homes! Good luck!

My 15 year old dog China died on a monday. We loved her so very much, but couldn't handle the "Missing Dog" in the house. We adopted Bobo 6 days later, and Boomer 3 weeks after. We didn't replace China's memory, we just filled the painful void she left. You'll know if/when you're ready for a new pet.

Wait a few weeks. Just be sure you and your kids don't compare the new cat with the one who died. It's not fair to the new one.

Whenever the time is right for you. I have always gotten another pet right away, but I know some people who have waited for up to a year.

We always got pets right after a the next day, few days, or a week after. We thought it was better to get another one to get our minds of the one we just lost. It's not like we forget the one we lost we are always comparing our lost dogs to our new ones and remember things like hey remember when so and so did this or how he used to do this. We always remember them and we have pictures of almost all of them I think. I would say for them and for you get another one now.
