We're approved, but we're looking to adopt. We've done a couple of respite weekends.
Pretty much what everyone's saying: criminal background, finances, work history, personal history, references, home visits. Be prepared to be scrutinized. If you have nothing to hide though, you have nothing to worry about.

My parents were foster parents. It took them about two years of classes and for the state to do all of it's interviews and inspections until we finally got the first foster kid. They want you to sit through so many hours of classes and take personality tests and they do background checks. They interview references, your family members and they come inspect every inch of your house. That was in TX- it might be different in PA.

You'll have to do a complete home study like you would if you were to adopt a child. Background check, fingerprints, credit check, social workers check out the home and so forth.. it is a process.. but worth it in the long run.
Here is a good website to explain. Good Luck.

your neighborhood is checked for safety. you home environment is checked to make sure the kid isnt going into a home with wierdo's. a background check is done in some/most cases. income dont matter because the state pays you to foster kids which is why some people do it. for the money. sad huh? anyway, those are some of the things for most states.

Greetings
Normally they check financial records, credit, criminal and medical records. Mostly they look for any prior conviction for child abuse, sexual abuse of minors and any crimes of moral misconduct. I know I am obligated as a Minister to report what I suspect as abuse and while it bothers me to do so I must look out for the best of the children no matter how much I want to help the parents. Any prior investigation even if resulted in no charges could be a stopper. I suggest searching your heart and history to make sure it's spotless.

Background check, fingerprints, drug testing, things like that. They also will inspect your home, and you will have to have it liscenced for foster care.
