It's fun to hear the stories of other college goers smuggling their pets onto campus!

What kind of pet did you have? How did you get your pet onto campus? What did your room/suitemates think? Did you get caught? What were the penalties?

every year I was in the dorm I had a pet...

Started out with a Hamster.. roomie didn't mind as long as she didn't have to touch him (he keep biting her.. LOL)

Moved to another dorm.. got a rat and then added another hamster (this was mabye 2 years after the last one)... roomie liked ratty... she ran away from school and left everything she owned behind before she ever met the hamster...

moved to a new school and dorm across teh country... got a gerbil (since in california they don't exist..) loved him..he was cute... roomie liked him...

never got caught... tips...

NEVER leave your room unattended for room check if you haveh room check and your pet alone in the room... sometimes they run on a wheel and get a squeeky wheel... if there's a fire drill or something where they check all rooms.. have a GREAT hiding place (ceiling pannels that come off kinda are great.. you can store things up there) and really really high off the ground cabnits.. ones you need a chair to stand on to reach.. make sur eyou have a plan for emergencies like that... your roomie knows' the plan too.. =) message me if you need more info...

I highly recomend a hamster... they are cute, and sleep a lot, and like to have an exercise wheel, like to snuggle with you, very slow if they do get loose... easy to feed... =)

My sophomore year I had a suitemate who smuggled in a parakeet named Pepper. He was cute and not very loud for a bird and he didn't bother any of us much. We never got caught and we used to joke it was because she kept his cage in the kitchen at home when she was in high school, and the only noise he learned to make was to beep like the microwave. Most of the other girls on our hall thought we just ate a lot. :)

I don't really know what the penalties would have been for getting caught, aside from having to get rid of him, but I kinda think it wasn't a huge priority for the dorm since he wasn't damaging anything or bothering anyone. We didn't take pains to hide the fact that he was in there.

I had a 4 foot reticulated python. He was good at hiding and since he didn't make a sound or have any smell he was easy to keep secret. We never got caught. I bought him from another person in the same dorm who bought him as a younger snake. We had all kinds of animals at our dorm even though it wasn't legal. One guy downstairs even got a giant scorpion. That thing was about 12" long and had some monster pincers on it. But someone in the dorm acted out of fear and killed the thing.

You should never "smuggle" a pet on campus. It doesnt matter what it is, have respect for the college rules, and also does anyone ever think that maybe some people have severe allergies, oh...and what else....animals can get into a lot of trouble if they are left alone.....hmmmm....now about those rules again

why break them

I never got caught. In my 2 years of living in the dorms, I had a snake and an anole(small lizard). I also had a 45 gal fish tank, but that wasn't prohibited at the time. I have since learned that they now put a max of 10 gal on fish tanks at my old school. My roommates thought I was crazy, but as long as they didn't get out...

I've had 2 pets in college - a rabbit who could open his own cage (and when he did, loved to chew electric cords - yikes!) and a hermit crab who was great until he escaped one night never to be found again. My roommates were always "on board" with the pets - I wouldn't get one otherwise! We didn't get caught . . . yet! :)

Yes. A Gerbil. I put him in my pocket when I went out shopping one day. My roomate loved him. When the semester ended, I let her keep him because she looked heart broken at the thought of Ernest leaving her forever. Never got caught thank goodness, but that was because I had a great partnet in crime.
