Time when vegetarians were thought to be weird?

I need to know a time when vegetarians were considered to be "weird". Like I'm doing something for school and I need to know something like an incident where vegetarians were isolated by the rest of the people because they are vegetarians. Does an incident like this exist?

I can't think of something we all can remember, but when I was younger, I became a vegetarian and moved south.
In the traditional south, it was more than weird, it was offensive! People looked at me like I was an alien but I assume their exposure to vegetarians was minimal at that time. This was in the late '90's.
