It's bright. Babies are sensitive to bright light since they are used to darkness in the womb.

You will have to ask a pro but my opinion is that the eye tries to limit the amount of light entering it by closing the pupil. The opposite occurs in the dark where the pupil is dilated.

Anyway, it may be a reflex thats caused by the pupil not being able to close enough to shut out a bright light so babies close their eyes. I hope its not pain that causes the reflex, please don't cause any harm whatever you do. If you have an eye dr. appt soon or know someone who does you can always ask the dr.

Be VERY careful and don't even mess around with laser pointers or other similar devices since the laser light may not always cause the same response in the pupil so the light may enter the eye and cause damage to the retina, rods/cones or the vitreous humor.

Why does anyone do that? Bright lights can be painful.
