My boss knows that I have nothing to do but shuffle papers around 50% of each day. If I ask for more work, my boss will give me 5-minutes worth of work and doesn't seem to care as long as I get my work done by the deadlines (which I do). We are also not allowed to play on the internet. I don't get bored, but I've become an avid clock watcher, because it makes for a very long day. Due to excellent pay and benefits, I don't want to look for another computer job. My co-workers have a similar problem, but they play on the internet and risk getting caught doing it. What do you think of this work situation?

I think you need to create work for yourself. Find something you think would be good for the business, and create a business plan. Present it to the higher ups.

Nothing like a self motivated employee. Don't wait for the boss to delegate, put the fire under yourself.

I think you have to weigh the situation up and make a big decision. Are you happy? I think i would lapse into a coma if i had to watch the clock for 4 hours a day. Seriously consider changing your job and moving into a dynamic, fulfilling environment - you'd be amazed how the time flies when you like what you do. If you have a family to support and you need that pay and benefits to sustain your lifesyle your decision will be more difficult, but you still need to assess whether you can shuffle papers for the rest of your working life without wanting to throw yourself out of a 30th storey window...

God speed to you.

I think that you need to look for advancement. Being at a job that does not keep you busy or interested is a big mistake alot of people make. You dont want to be in a place where you regret being because you will make yourself so unhappy
