Thomas Jackson, aka "Stonewall" after his brigade's performance during the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas Junction).
The phrase comes from Lee's reported comment after he heard of Jackson's wounding during the Battle Of Chancellorsville, May 1863: "He may have lost his left arm (amputated the day before) but I have lost my right."
Jackson actually died of pneumonia brought on as post-op infection not, as commonly thought, of the amputation itself.
