when you move down to the 5th string on a power chord, do you mute the 6th with your thumb or your palm?

The other guys are talking about palm muting which where you want to note but just muted. If you want to mute the note all together you can use your thumb, or you can use your first or second finger; which ever one is closer to the string.

I think it's better to mute the 6th string with your palm..... I play guitar too, so I know this stuff.

Neither is 'better' really. It depends on what kind of sound you're trying to get and what feels comfortable for you. If by chance you're playing punk music it's usually heavily palm-muted, though.

I always mute with my palm because it feels more natural to me.
