Being a perfectionist is a symptom of an emotional problem, and can be diagnosed as OCD, which is a disorder, not a mental illness. There are varying degrees, some of which can be quite harmless and some that are incapacitating, creating problems for themselves and the people around them. If they have OCD it is 24/7.

I used to be a perfectionist. Any project I did had to be absolutely perfect. When I cleaned my room, I remember positioning my remote so it was at just the right angle on my night table. I suppose I was a pretty hardcore perfectionist. That was up until about 8th grade. And 9th grade is when I started to become a slacker. I'm still a slacker, becoming worse each day almost, and I suck in school. Is slackerism a menal problem, too, then? Who knows.

Being a perfectionist can cover many things. My daughter is one when it comes to her grades. she has gone all the way threw school and into college with all a's. She'd need therapy if she ever got a b.
