Juvenile Bald Eagles are a mixture of brown and white; with a black bill in young birds. It takes about 5 years for the head and tail feathers to gradually turn white.

Look up a picture of the golden eagle- that is pretty much the description of a subadult bald eagle (before the white starts to set in). In my area, golden eagles are very very rare, but we keep getting sightings reported because people saw a juvenile bald eagle, and thought it was a golden.

The juvenile eagles generally have odd piercings, wear their head feathers in an odd array and the feathers around their tails look as if they are about to fall off. They generally hang around in groups, and ignore their parents.
