Your one question on Yahoo! Answers started from a prejudiced premise and skipped into completely uninformed.
Gay people are not defensive by nature, but become defensive when dealing with ignorance. Some basic research could have told you much about gays serving in the military in the US under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and openly abroad.
I would suggest framing your questions in a more open manner, much as you have done with this one, if you are truly seeking understanding.

What kinds of questions are you asking? Perhaps you should try looking at the situation from the other person's point of view. Imagine that a gay person is about to ask the question to you; would you be offended? If so, you might want to rephrase it or not ask at all.
It might just be a matter of asking the question in a more polite manner to get more friendly responses.

Perhaps your questions are worded in such a way as to give the impression you're knocking people because of their sexual orientation. Whyn't ya try again and see if you can word 'em a bit differently?
Homosexual men and women are born that way. It is not a choice. People don't just wake up one morning and say "I think I'll become gay." Did you wake up one morning and say "Gee,I guess I'll be heterosexual."?? No, ya didn't - nor do gay folks. There really is little more that you actually need to know - you need not ask how gay people engage in intimacy. It's none of your business. You would feel the same way if I demanded to know exactly how you and your woman get it on. You'd tell me "f*ck off!". That's the way gay people feel about such nosy questions. There - happy now?

The problem here is that the majority of the people who ask questions arethe homophobes. If you ask an intelligent question that is not hatefull, you will get some good answers here.

Gay people have to be defensive, the world is cruel and they expect it to stay that way. So automatically they throw up the gloves and hit hard.
Can't blame them, it is the straight world that is really screwed up. Pardon the pun.
I believe they should be allowed to get married so they can be miserable like the rest of us at least once in their life. Experience divorce and find out what an easy life they really had before.

I don't think all straight people are homophobic. I only get defensive when people are rude and/or disrespectful to others. What is your question any way?

You can find out about alternative lifestyles in the Village Voice. That news paper is as gay as it gets.
