My grandpa was a twin (they didn't know that the mother was expecting twins so the other died at birth). We don't know whether they were identical or fraternal twins but they were both boys. Does twinning (if they were fraternal twins) skip a generation? My Mum has 3 kids, we are not twins. Have I got an increased chance of having twins? Its my Mums side of the family. I am a female. My mums siblings (males) haven't had twins either.

Skipping generations is just a myth of twinning. Yes, fraternal twins can be hereditary, but there is no proof of skipping generations. I think it seems that way many times by coincidence.

Just because they run in the family doesnt mean you will have them. Yes your chances of twins are there because of them being the family, but doesnt mark anyone for having them.. My mothers side of the family has 7 sets of twins total my grandfather was the last set.. and on my dads side my greatgrandfather was the only single birth out of 13 children.. There was 3 sets of twins and 2 sets of triplets there.. There has been no other twins born into our family at any time after these births.. Twins really dont accure as often as people may think..

Twinning does not necessarily run by skipping generations and such, or we'd have had twins... My wife's mum is one of a set of twins; we had two singletons.

On the whole, about 1 in 89 pregnancies produces twins (both types together) if that's any help to you.

My Grandpa on my mom's side was a twin but had only singletons but I had twins and my sister conceived twins (lost one.) Maybe coincidence but I remember being 8 and my sister saying you know we are going to have twins because it skips a generation.... so who really knows? j/k I don't think the skip is true (even though it was for us) but it is definitely hereditary.

I am not quite sure how many generations it skips but my great grandmother was a twin and I just had twins.
