You sing from your diaphragm. (No, not the birth control device)
If you are singing correctly from your diaphragm, you will be able to adjust loud and soft and the strength of your voice with whatever piece you are performing.

Breath support is the only way to control your voice effectively. You need to practice breathing from the diaphragm. Try taking a deep breath that makes your stomach stick out. That's breathing to the bottom of your lungs. Now try breathing deeply using the stomach muscles to support. You shouldn't feel it in your throat when you sing because that means you aren't supporting from deep down. Take some voice lessons. They can help you get your breathing right.
