It is a painted drywall ceiling. I would prefer a good cleaner that would allow me to remove it permanently without repainting or any other evasive procedures.

Be careful of that one!!!!!! I dealt with the same thing and if you do not clean it up with precaution, you could send very unhealthy toxins into the air. Their are alot of websites about proper clean up of mold in the home. Please be careful.... especially if you have children around.

Mold is usually caused from moisture. Is there something right above the area that is causing that area to be damp?
Is the area stained with a ring like is has been damp or is it damp to the touch? Is it the whole ceiling or just a small area? The heating and cooling in your house would generally keep this problem from occurring. I would try to find out what is causing it and then "Tilex" which is basically a bleach spray would probably be your best bet. You may have to repaint. You will want to be sure to put plastic or something on the furniture or paper underneath where you are spraying and something to protect the adjacent walls.

I had the same problem in one of my rooms, and it ALL over the walls & ceiling. I went to the hardware store and they recommended TSP-PF. You mix that with water according to the directions and just scrub. After we cleaned it we let it dry for a couple days and then put a fresh coat of paint on it. That was 2 years ago, and we haven't had any since.

If it's all the way through the drywall, you would need to replace it. If it's surface, bleach will kill it and remove most of the stain and then use Kilz primer before re-painting. Make sure you open a window before using bleach to clean though. Even if you use a ratio of 1/3 bleach to 2/3 water.

If you apply bleach that is concentrated and then prime it ( after it dries) with a mold/moisture resistant primer then it should stay gone. If it comes back then it means that the mold was already beyond the surface and so the sheetrock needs to be replaced...
