Like seriously who thinks the origianl capt. pierce (alan alda) was so much better.

There is a stigma with movie to TV crossovers, at least there was back then. Radar wasn't as big of a movie star as Eliot Gould and the others. Gary Burghof income as a movie icon was shaky at best, but the series offered a steady paycheck. The others were a known commodity, probably already under contract for more movies.

Gary Burghoff, Timothy Brown and George Wood all appeared in both the movie and the tv series. Brown played Cpl Judson in the movie, and Spearchucker Jones in early episodes in the series. Wood played Gen Hammond in both.

Because television was considerd a second class medium in those days and none of the originals actors, Duvall, Gould, Sutherland, etc. would have been interested in being locked into a sitcom.
