I think it's better than capitalism myself. The concept is that everyone shares in the production and assets of society. The difficulty with it has been getting some people to work very hard when they get a share anyway, but with the runaway greed and capitalism that we currently have some people get it all, and they don't all work for it either. Some are just born with it and get to play their whole lifetime. At least in socialistic economies everyone has food, medicine, education etc. Most other civilized countries have some socialistic elements mixed with capitalism. Everyone else has medical care for everybody for example. We are not really civilized anymore, we worship greed, which is the worst thing about capitalism.

I think the problem with socialism versus capitolism comes to the human condition. The faction of those that tout about socialism dont usually strike me as the true socialist but more experimenting for novelty. It happens quite a bit because social people are seduced by the idea of working in tandem with groups of other people and enjoy the prospect of freedom from competition. The downfall of it I think is that people dont often deal well with the we over I mentality. If you like to use work as an example, think of being paid a fixed salary for the entire year with no bonuses, while everyone does get free healthcare if youre not sick or injured you have to work every day. The only days where some groups in the workforce get off for national and religious holidays. At work you dont feel so appreciated because it doesnt matter if you slack off. These are the kind of problems a regular person encounters and they have a direct correlation to why these countries have problems with corruption. Socialism works on the premise of taking all ego and selfish want that is in a person and making it illegal, and state sanctioning every form of commerce, but since want is something that is a human flaw it comes out in the higher levels of these governments.

Government control of services needed by people. There is no incentive to make use of scare resources hence the economic output is terrible. Goods sit rotting in warehouses. But in a capitalistic economy when companies compete fairly then resources get used in the best possible way and the country's economy blossoms. No wonder some countries with a vast amounts of natural resources can't even feed their population or find jobs such as former Soviet Union. And then we have countries with no almost no natural resources such as Japan or Switzerland whose economies are flourishing because of capitalism.

The worst thing about socialism is, people like Hillary and Ted think the only reason it hasn't worked elsewhere is the wrong people were in charge.

History bears me out, the worst thing about socialism is, it kills creativity and competition! The two things that democracy has historically proven push humanity to new heights of impoveration, creativity, devolpement, health, wealth, developement, growth, freedom, happiness, self fullfilment, self worth , etc. etc. etc.

That, according to the Marxist principles, "From each according to his ability; to each according to need."
This is the basic foundation for what we are seeing in socialist countries today. Even here, we have devolved into a wealth redistribution system that does not allow the common man to accumulate wealth. It is taken away in the form of taxes, which are then given to the welfare suckups.

The problem with socialism is that it promises everything to everyone for free, because everyone else will be paying for it. As Margaret Thatcher once said, "Sooner or later you run out of other people's money."

It depends on the leadership, if it is a dictatorship (which socialist countries usually are) then there is a higher risk for fascism, which means limited freedom of speech and fear of the government.

To each their own I guess ... as long as theyre not hurting anybody else.

It strips people of liberty.....of the right to decide what they produce and how much, to distribute it as they see fit, and to keep what they earn. Liberty is the antithesis of socialism.

Equality is the hallmark of socialism, but equality simply means taking from those who produce to give to those who don't. Liberty is a far greater goal.
