I know it's a weird question, but humor me here.

Thanks for all of the answers! I just realized how vague this question is, sorry. My bad!

Usually I leave it in standby when I'm away at work, but sometimes I just let it sleep. Occasionally when I come home and it's been sleeping, it will have been restarted. I rarely leave many (if any) programs running, but it does have connection to the internet. I run a virus scan weekly and have never had a single file quarantined. It's a Dell Inspiron 600 and its running WindowsNT.

"Bill Voldemort"...Ha ha ha!!! That's hilarious...

Sometimes when mine gets upgrades and needs to restart to install them it will give me a countdown to restart, during which I can select "restart later". If I am away at the time and the timer runs out, it restarts itself.

Yes, lots...it was probably a system error (Blue Screen). I'm guessing you're running WinXP or Vista. These operating systems reboot themselves on a blue screen error.

Assuming it's XP...go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery "Settings" button and uncheck "Automatically Restart". That will stop your computer from rebooting automatically on the next Blue Screen..so you'll at least have an idea what the error message is, if any system files are listed, etc.

If you want to be fancy, you can check out the event log...Click Start, Run, enter in "eventvwr.msc" and click "OK". The crash message you're looking for might be in the "System" log.

Additionally, it could be a hardware problem, possibly one that causes Windows to crash/blue screen. If you've had your computer for a while, open it up and re-seat all the components: RAM, Video card, other peripheral cards...that'd be a start.

The best place to check out what is going on with your computer is the event log. find your "my computer icon" and right click on it. scroll down to manage and left click on that. That should bring up your computer management console. You should see a folder that says eventviewer, click on the plus sign to the left hand side of the icon. now you will see a few more icons underneath, these are your event logs. click on system or application and you will see a bunch of logs appear on the right hand side, browse around at any red error logs and see what they say, then you can post that as your next question because at this point it is way too hard to tell what is causing your computer to restart because there are infinate possibilities.

Its either a RAM hardware problem, or you O/S is defective.
I recommend replacing it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

It will be more reliable, make better use of the hardware
and won't support Bill Voldemorte. Oh yeah - and they're free.

Probably just a virus. You could be losing power off and on. Every-time that happens both my computers and printers start singing.

If it overheats, it will restart itself.

Also, sometimes, a hardware or software problem/conflict will make the computer crash and windows will automatically restart.

Yes, a virus. Something like that could be several viruses at once.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

It's probably running Windows. Get a Mac...
