Placenta praevia is the situation in which the placenta is attached low in the uterus so that it is overlying the cervix. The placenta can not be delivered before the baby as that would produce the problem of the baby's being deprived of oxygen; therefore, undoubtedly, your sister's obstetrician would perform a caesarian section when she is due. Another possibility for a negative occurrence with placenta praevia is that the placenta, being so low and somewhat exposed, might begin to bleed which could endanger the pregnancy, causing the baby to have to be delivered prematurely. For those two reasons (and perhaps others unknown to me but resulting from the fact that it is your sister's seventh pregnancy) the pregnancy would be regarded as high risk.

There are several degrees of placenta previa.
In a marginal previa, the placenta is right next to the internal opening of the cervix. In labor, as she dilates, there can be a lot of bleeding. Sometimes a c-section is necessary, sometimes not.
With a complete previa, the placenta is implanted over the cervix, completely blocking the baby's exit from the womb. A c-section is the only way to deliver. They won't even let her go into labor.
There is increased risk of bleeding during the pregnancy also, and sometimes an early delivery is necessary.
They should have told her this, but if it is a complete previa, she cannot have sexual relations. They probably will put her on bedrest if there is bleeding.
This isn't such an uncommon thing, and most women ultimately do fine, and have healthy babies.

A placenta previa just need to be re-evaluated during the pregnancy. That just means the placenta is close to the cervical opening. The baby has to be able to pass through the cervix without the placenta being in the way. As the uterus grows with the pregnancy the placenta previa may be resolved without having to have a c-section. If the placenta covers the cervix it is called a complete previa. It can just be close and be called a marginal previa. It can also just be low lying and be within two centimeters of the crevix and those are most likely to resolve themselves. Your sister just needs a good OB doctor to monitor her care. If she experiences vaginal bleeding it can be caused by a placenta previa and she should notify her doctor is that occurs. There is no reason to worry throughout the remainder of her pregnancy. She just needs to keep her appointments and do as her doctor tells her about this condition.

I had placenta previa also. I was put on strict bed rest at my 5th month because I was high risk because of my age. The good news is my doctor said that there are no possible risks to the baby. Just the mother. She needs to get plenty of rest and hopefully she doesn't go into labor. The risks of hemmoraging is really great so they will schedule her a c-section a couple of weeks early to ensure she doesn't go into labor. Everything went well with mine I was just really bored all the time. But I wish her the best of luck and don't freak out!!!

It's not the best thing to have. I had pp in my last pregnancy which was only my second birth. I was due the 16 may and I had my baby on the 10 march he was born at 29 weeks and 3 days gestation, He weighed 1.72kg. I started bleeding at 24 weeks and was in hospital on and off until I had him. I was lucky to not have to have a c-section but I bleed really bad and lost 2 and a half litres of blood they said I was lucky to survive, my son also.I went into labour 3 times in 5 weeks, the third time they couldn't stop him from being born. I was lucky that I had the steroid shots to help mature his lungs. He just celebrated his 2nd b'day and has had no major medical problems.

Placenta Praevia means that the placenta has grown over the cervix, meaning the baby cannot come out the normal way. That's why it's labelled high risk. Fortunately, your sister is having a baby in 2007 and not 1007! so she will be able to have surgery to deliver the baby.

It can be dangerous, I had complete placenta previa & was put on bed rest at the end of my 6th month, due to bleeding. As long as she takes it easy & no heavy lifting she should be fine. I had to have a c-section & there is a higher risk of hemoraging (don't think I spelled that right) so my mom & sister gave blood to keep on reserve for me in case of excessive bleeding at delivery. They had the same blood type as me. All worked out well for me & I have a healthy beautiful baby girl! I hope all works out for your sister. Good luck!

Placenta previa simply means low implantation of placenta that is characterized by painless vaginal bleeding. Can be classified as low, marginal or complete placenta previa. She is considered high risk because she is a mulltipara plus with placenta previa. Most cases of pp leads to ceasarian section.

she isn't necessarily high risk because of the placenta. the placenta is covering the opening to the cervix -placenta previa (first). the baby should deliver first and the placenta last. as the cervix begins to dilate, she may experience spotting or mild pain. any tearing sensations or alot of blood means she needs to call 911.
