need help right away! how do you do an outline for a chapter in a textbook?

i have trouble picking out main ideas and other important ones...i either give to much to were i should have just turned in the textbook or i either give to little and leave out stuff....its for history....its not a research paper its for chapter outlines that we do weekly ...im not doing so hot in history ....i need a fast and easy way to pick out the main ideas and put them on paper.
