Seems to be a dying american trait. all are foreign who feel they are better than american sewers. And they're usually 60 and older. or way older

Yes, born and raised in the USA in the Pocono Mountains. I design and make bridal gowns and prom dresses. I also do alterations. My (estranged) sister has a custom sewing business as well, also in Pennsylvania.

Are you looking to have something made?

I'm past 60, and have been using a sewing machine since I was 8 years old. Old doesn't make us bad or out of date or anything of the sort. I'm in the Midwest and find there are a lot of gals who sew and do it quite well. As a matter of fact, a group of us meet in my sister's garage once a month and sew, quilt, whatever we want to do in that line. Sometimes we have 10-12 sewing machines going! Our youngest seamstress is 8 years old and she made her first patchwork fleece blanket when she was 6. Sewing is not a dying American trait. And by the way, use a capital "A" when you write American, please!

Plenty here in the Midwest of all ages.
Maybe we tend to keep some of the old traditions going here-lots of quilting, homemade bridal gowns, etc.
Keep looking. Whatever area of the country you are in there has to be somebody.
Check with a local 4H club they may have some suggestions.
By the way, my favorite seamstress is a 55 year old Hispanic female who does all her sewing by hand. So don't let nationality or heritage keep you from purchasing something handmade.
Good luck!

I would think ANYONE who's a senior citizen and a dressmaker would consider themselves a superior craftsman. And maybe foreigners are better. They may have had to work extra hard and do better to get the same recognition as an American.

Count my mother and I BOTH in! She designs and creates custom wedding and special occasion gowns, as well as doing alterations and making general clothing. She also does slipcovers, curtains and all other kinds of interior decorating stuff. Oh and did I mention she can make boat cushions?! Hhahahaa... I stick to making my own clothes. It's IS a dying art but it seems we've got it covered in the NJ/PA area!!!

Yup! American born and self taught! I haven't even hit 50 yet! I have my own business and throughly enjoy sewing of all kinds! I live in Illinois and have lived here my whole life, even my parents - not that that makes any difference.
