Does Islam pose a threat to the west or is it mis-understood? After all everything you hear in the News relating to Islam is about yet another 'plot' to blow up some famous landmark.

Is all this bad publicity necessary if all it does is fuel hatred?

Christians have started a whole lot of wars: Hitler, the Crusades, any war started by a "defender of the faith". Islam is a loving, peaceful religion. Don't blame the religion due to the arrogance of the minority. Otherwise, the world would think all Americans are loud talking Texans who send soldiers off to die and don't give a dam about the rest of the world eg why Irag??? Why not now go into Zimbabwe???

I think it is like everything else. Someone out there is going to make something bad out of something good. It is like all other faiths, some people, not all want to make it into "their" own version and use it how they want it to be used and make it say what they want to say and hear what they want to hear. I watched a thing a while back on a news show and the teens and other people over there and here in the U.S. don't agree with how some Islamics are acting and the things they are doing.

The tribes that ruled the region had a habit of burying new-born infant girls.

When Islam came, that practice was forbidden.

When the first wars of Islam were fought, the prophet Muhammad decreed that all prisoners of war were to be treated fairly and justly - and they were set free if they could teach children to read and write.

When the Jews faced persecution in the Inquisition, they fled to the Islamic empire, which game them sanctuary and equal rights.

One of the obligations to being a Muslim is that one must give charity and donations to the poor.

Far from a wicked and vicious faith, Islam preaches peace and fairness. Don't let the actions of a few cloud up the ideals of the faith.

Islam does not mean submission, it actually means peace. It is generally a peaceful religion, but it is just some who twist the words to suit their own needs. But every religion does this. Muslims aren't the only ones who have killed, Christian, Catholics they're all guilty as well.

Don't base your impression of the many on the actions of a few.

I don't think that all Americans are war-mongering scum, whose sole intent is world domination, just because a couple of Americans are. And not all Germans are Jew hating, Nazi facists.

With all due respect to the above posters who agree that Islam is a wicked faith, I would like to inform you that in reality its not. The prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the best man on Earth, and he taught the religion of Islam to humanity. Islam was never a wicked or vicious faith, it is the most pure and peaceful religion. Muhammad taught the Muslims peace, sincerity and love.
After all, some so called "Muslims" may act unlikely, and commit foolish acts. Yet, in Islam, we do not call the people that go against the orders of Allah (God) and his prophet (Muhammad), Muslims...
Now I would like to ask you a question. Put the word 'Christianity' instead of 'Islam' in everything you hear on the news, and listen to how it relates to a 'plot' to blow up something...In that case, would you believe it is a wicked and vicious faith?

Islam is not that terrible. When people think Islam poses a threat, it is because Islam teaches to teach their faith to all nonbelievers. This is similer to America trying to impress our form of democracy on to other countries, but hey, that's just me comparing.

What you consider to be wicked is not wicked to a Muslim. You probably thought it was wicked when Bin Laden committed the 9-11 terrorist attack. You probably thought it was wicked when Islamic terrorists began to plot terrorist attacks in places like Britian, Spain, and France shortly after the 9-11 terrorist attack in the U.S. That isn't what Muslims believe. Muslims in the Middle East thought the people living in the West had exactly what was coming to them. They thought the terrorist attacks were the will of God. It's the same reason why Muslims in Palestine have been going to Israel and exploding themselves. Islam commands them to convert or destroy anyone that is not Muslim. I'm not sure if Islam is wicked, but I do know that anyone who takes it seriously will literally drive himself insane. There are more than five billion people living on earth that do not believe in Islam. Many of those people will never become Muslims, and it takes an insane person like Bin Laden to believe they will.

Islam, in this context, is not a religion, it's a political movement.
Treat it with the same contempt as any other party.

No, Islam is an honest religion no better or worse than Christianity. It depends what you make of it. I don't like religion. Religion always comes down to "I'm better than you" type thoughts.

Today the US policy is to fight Islam, but how can this be true if we are trying to bring the peace and prosperity to the region? We are senseless in what we are doing in the name of God.
