Not realistic oil is a fixed resource, and the ethonal is rigged by the farm lobby to tell you the true cost of fuel compsumtion. USA needs to start taxing engine sizes, and car weight, and having punitiive taxes on SUV that weight more than the average vechicle, and that should slow the rate of fuel costs.
Veichles are only 30% of fuel usage, and the other 70% from heating homes, and creating electricity in certain regions. R&D spendings needs to go up so we have a chance to move over to cheaper sources of energy to drive. Long run other sources will be available, but to speed the more Resreach dollars are needed towards to rely less on oil.

Simple. Use less fuel.
Consumers can do a better job of driving less, combining trips, carpooling, using public transportation, the list goes on...
Auto manufacturers will continue to research and develop better fuel-burn technology (like direct fuel injection) and hybrid/electric cars.
Aircraft/jet engine manufacturers can work with airlines to reduce weight (which increases fuel efficiency) and develop more electric propulsion systems, reducing dependence on petroleum-based products.
The price of oil will fluctuate forever, so the main way for "we the people" to help cut the price is to lower the demand.

We have to design an engine that runs on waste materials, such as cooking oils (already designed and being used) or other trash that mankind has so much of. Maybe a vehicle that will run on carbon dioxide and turn it to oxygen.
When the demand for gas drops the price will too.

Reduce consumption while increasing exploration and refinement. In economic terms: reduce demand while increasing supply.
